Torre Mozza is a small seaside resort along the Ionian coast, between Santa Maria di Leuca and Gallipoli, which once belonged to the territory of Gemini, a former fief of the Mensa Vescovile. Today Torre Mozza is one of the marinas of Ugento, only about sixty kilometers from Lecce. The name tells of a watchtower from 1565, built as Torre dei Fiumi to defend the coast against invasions by Saracen pirates, which collapsed as soon as the work was completed.
Over the centuries it has suffered various partial collapses and subsequent reconstructions have given the place its name: Torre Mozza (from mozzata). During the Second World War it was used by soldiers as a machine-gun position. Today it still retains the shape of a truncated cone and overlooks the fine sandy beach, dominating the village, inhabited only in the summer. The surrounding landscape is full of canals and artificial basins, built in the 1930s when these areas were reclaimed and today used for aquaculture. The paths that run along the artificial basins are the ideal destination for those who love outdoor sports, such as: fishing, running, trekking, cycling, paddle, etc. Also ideal for those who simply want to take a long walk in a natural oasis, surrounded by the regional natural park of the Ugento coast, a protected natural area of the Puglia region that allows you to reach the nearby seaside resorts of Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini (on both sides of Torre Mozza) on foot.
