Gallipoli and surroundings

The famous nickname of "Beautiful City" (this is the meaning of the toponym that derives from the Greek language) fits it perfectly. In fact, Gallipoli has always been attractive, since its ancient origins. Otherwise, it would be impossible to explain why it has been continuously, over the centuries, at the centre of the sights of various conquering peoples: its territory has been subject to successive dominations and invasions by the Romans, Barbarians, Byzantines, Greeks, Normans, Angevins, Aragonese, Venetians, Spanish, French and others.

The “honey” of the Ionian city, there is no doubt, was and has long been its port and the commercial activities linked to it. Indeed, its ports. In fact, there are two places where boats can land and moor, the oldest of which (the fishing port) is located near the Greek Fountain and close to the Rivellino, almost on the border (marked by a 17th-century brick bridge) between the modern village (the renowned Corso Roma is its symbol) and the old city.
